Harnessing the Power of Community for Modern Black African Matriarchs

Updated: Apr 23

In today’s world, Black African women often carry the weight of many roles. We lead in our careers, nurture our families, and build our communities. This strength is admirable, but it can also feel isolating. Like the elephant matriarch who guides her herd, the true power of a modern Black African woman lies not only in her individual strength but in the community that surrounds her. The herd is her greatest asset.

Moving Beyond the "Strong Black Woman" Narrative

The idea of the "strong Black woman" has long been celebrated, but it can also become a burden. Carrying the expectation to be unbreakable often means ignoring personal needs and avoiding vulnerability. True empowerment comes from recognising when to ask for help and when to lean on others.

Community offers a space where stories, struggles, and successes are shared openly. This collective support nourishes the body, mind, and soul. When Black African women share their experiences and resources, they create a ripple effect that uplifts not only themselves but their entire lineage.

Lessons from the Matriarch

Shared Wisdom

The oldest elephant matriarch leads her herd to water during droughts, relying on memory and experience. Similarly, modern matriarchs pass down knowledge to younger generations. This includes protecting legal rights, sharing economic opportunities, and preserving cultural identity. Mentorship is a vital part of this process.

For example, a successful entrepreneur might mentor younger women in business, sharing practical advice on navigating challenges and building sustainable ventures. This transfer of wisdom strengthens the whole community.

The Safety Net

In an elephant herd, members protect one another, especially when someone is vulnerable. This protective circle is essential for survival. In life and business, having a trusted circle of women who encourage and support each other creates a sanctuary.

Ask yourself: Are you surrounded by women who lift you up? Building this circle might mean joining local groups, attending workshops, or simply reaching out to friends who understand your journey.

Rest as a Radical Act

Even the strongest creatures know the importance of rest. The elephant pauses to conserve energy and maintain strength. For modern matriarchs, rest is not a luxury but a necessity. Taking time to recharge ensures you have the energy to continue leading and caring for others.

Rest can take many forms: quiet moments of reflection, time spent in nature, or simply saying no to additional responsibilities. Prioritising rest is a powerful way to sustain long-term success and well-being.

Finding Your Rhythm

As you move through your week, consider how you can build and nurture your herd. Reflect on these questions:

  • Who are the women in your life that provide support and encouragement?

  • How can you share your knowledge and experiences to help others grow?

  • What steps can you take to prioritize rest and self-care?

Building community is an ongoing process. It requires openness, trust, and a willingness to both give and receive support. The strength of the herd lies in its unity and shared purpose.
