We often move through life making countless decisions without pausing to reflect. Yet, some moments call for a deeper look back to understand where we are and where we might go. Recently, while sorting through old digital journals and research files, I discovered a powerful connection between past experiences and future possibilities. This journey through time revealed how early encounters with technology, like the Amstrad computer, laid the groundwork for today’s AI-driven efforts to improve health equity and human rights.


Looking back helps us imagine a future where technology supports fair access to healthcare for all. This post explores how reflecting on the evolution of technology and personal experience can inspire new solutions in health equity.

The Early Lessons from Amstrad and Prompt Engineering


It Started with an Amstrad

For those who remember, the Amstrad wasn't anything like the intuitive tablets, smartphones, or AI assistants we use today. There were no touchscreens, colourful app icons, or voice commands. If you wanted the computer to do anything at all, you had to tell it exactly what to do.


That meant learning commands.

Every instruction had to be typed with precision. A missing character or incorrect command could mean nothing happened—or the computer simply responded with an error. Loading even the simplest program required patience, accuracy, and an understanding of how computers interpreted human instructions.

Without realising it, ten-year-old me was learning the foundations of what we now call prompt engineering.


Long before conversational AI, humans were already learning how to communicate effectively with machines. The difference is that today's AI understands natural language, whereas early computers required rigid, structured commands. Yet the principle remains remarkably similar: the quality of the instruction shapes the quality of the response.


Looking back, those quiet hours in my father's study taught me something far more valuable than how to operate a computer. They nurtured a way of thinking—breaking problems into clear instructions, experimenting, learning from mistakes, and discovering how humans and technology can work together.


Perhaps that's why today's AI revolution feels less like something entirely new and more like the continuation of a journey that began decades ago, in front of a beige Amstrad computer, with a curious ten-year-old wondering what else a machine might be capable of.


Since that moment, I have been absolutely fascinated by the user interface of technology—the bridge that allows humans to communicate with machines. Over the decades, I’ve watched that bridge get shorter, smoother, and more accessible. I have marvelled at the immense impact and improvements technology has brought to me personally, and more importantly, to large, underserved communities across the globe.



This early experience taught the importance of clear communication between humans and machines. It was an unintentional lesson in what we now call prompt engineering—the skill of crafting inputs that guide AI to produce useful outputs. Understanding this foundation helps us appreciate how far technology has come and how it can be used to address complex social issues like health equity.


A Sense of Déjà Vu

When OpenAI and advanced generative AI systems burst onto the scene, I’ll admit I was hesitant. I was on red alert. As someone deeply invested in human-centred stories, human rights, and advocacy, I steered clear for years. I worried technology might dilute the raw, lived experiences that form the core of our missions at The Matrisse and CHD Africa.


But one random day, I decided to give it a go for something completely mundane. Oh my! The hesitation melted into curiosity. I wanted to learn more, which led me to research, discover Outskills, and officially sign up to master these tools.


Sitting in front of an AI prompt box today feels like an incredible moment of déjà vu. I am right back in front of that childhood Amstrad, typing text to unlock a world of possibilities. We are on the cusp of a massive societal shift. Looking back at how far we’ve come makes me look ahead and wonder: What will technology look like 20, 30, or 40 years from now?




Bridging Past and Present: Using AI to Enhance Health Equity


Fast forward to today, AI tools can process vast amounts of data quickly and identify patterns that humans might miss. When I introduced old journal entries and field research from work with CHD Africa and The Matrisse into modern AI systems, the results were striking. The AI synthesised past insights with current knowledge, offering new directions for tackling health disparities.


This process shows how combining historical data with AI can:


  • Reveal long-term trends in health access and outcomes

  • Identify underserved populations based on past and present data

  • Suggest targeted interventions that respect cultural and social contexts


By looking back, we gain a clearer picture of persistent barriers and opportunities for change.

The Role of Human Rights in Shaping Health Solutions

AI can support these efforts by providing evidence-based insights that respect human dignity and promote fairness.

When we peer into the future of technology, we shouldn't just think about faster phones or shinier gadgets. We need to think about human dignity.

In the next few decades, the intersection of technology, health equity, and human rights will be critical.


  • For Health Equity (CHD Africa): Imagine AI tools that can instantly synthesise decades of localized, unpublished field data to predict maternal health crises before they happen, ensuring rural communities receive the exact resources they need. Technology can democratize medical knowledge, breaking down geographic and financial barriers to health care.


  • For Human Rights and Safety (The Matrisse): Consider how intelligent systems can create safer digital and physical spaces for women and young people, translating lived experiences into actionable policy changes without compromising privacy or security.


Technology, at its best, is an equalizer. The tools we are building and learning to use today are the foundations for a fairer, safer tomorrow.


Practical Steps for Using AI to Support Health Equity


To harness AI effectively for health equity, we need thoughtful strategies that combine technology with human-centered values. Here are some practical steps:


  • Collect diverse data that includes voices from marginalized communities

  • Ensure transparency in how AI models make decisions

  • Collaborate with local organizations to tailor solutions to specific needs

  • Train users to understand AI outputs and apply them responsibly

  • Monitor outcomes to avoid unintended biases or harms


These steps help build trust and ensure AI tools serve the people who need them most.

Looking Back to Move Forward


Reflecting on the journey from a simple Amstrad computer to advanced AI systems reveals a powerful truth: understanding our past equips us to shape a better future. Early experiences with technology taught the value of clear communication and problem-solving. Combining those lessons with modern AI offers new ways to address health inequities and uphold human rights.


The path forward requires blending technology with empathy, history with innovation, and data with community voices. By doing so, we can create health solutions that are not only smart but also just and inclusive.

My recent breakthrough didn't come from chasing the newest, trendiest tech fad. It came from using a modern tool to unlock the value of old assets—the data, journals, and research we had already accumulated.
